THAT NIGHT...

 

The Soul Train Music Awards after-party was going strong at the Automobile Museum the evening of March 9, 1997.  Diddy (known as Puffy at the time) and Biggy and their entourage were having a good time upstairs where most of the activity was going on.  Around midnight the police and fire department shut the party down, even with riot gear.  We were told it was being shut down because it was over-crowded.  I didn’t understand that because the museum is huge with plenty of upstairs and downstairs space.  It was not overcrowded at all.  Anyway, I thought it might be best to make it quick to go downstairs at the exit to take the photos of all of the celebrities leaving.  As Biggie and Puff were walking toward the exit, I asked him if I could take his photo.  He called Puff over to take the shot with him and said to me “make it quick baby” and pointed at me, not knowing he was walking out to his death… (more about the story to come)
